One gold and three bronze medals at FISU University World Cup Combat Sports

Patryk Adamus (National College of Ireland) returns from the FISU University World Cup Combat Sports with a gold medal following a superb performance. Adamus stopped his opponent in the second round to become the first Irish boxer to win a gold medal at world third level competition.

There was further success in Samsun, Turkey as Aoibhe Carabine (ATU Galway), Darren O’Connor (University of Galway) and Matthew McCole (ATU Donegal) won bronze medals for the Irish team.

Leanne Murphy (University of Limerick), competing in her first international championship lost in her quarter-final bout to the eventual winner in her weight category.

The FISU University World Cup Combat Sports that took place between 21-30 September is a biennial event where university athletes compete in six sports: Boxing, Karate, Muaythai, SAMBO, Wrestling and Wushu.
